Here's Your Chance to Teach Others and Enrich Your Life

Why not pay your way around the world by putting your skills to use? Trade lessons in music, language, art and much more, for room and board.

You could tutor children, help out in schools or give private one-on-one lessons to your host.

Hovos can connect you with the right hosts in the right places.

Traveling with Hovos is always a one-of-a-kind experience, you’ll never find opportunities like these through a travel agent!

Are you looking to learn a new skill or improve on an existing one?

Be a host family for a foreign traveler

Hovos connects travelers with the hosts that need their particular skills.

As a host taking in a foreign traveler - mostly students - you provide accommodation and food free of cost.

In return, the individual you're hosting will help you with a project, in this case, teaching.

Our volunteers are nice, intelligent and driven by wanderlust! They're responsible individuals, knowing full well that they have to make good on their commitments in order to enable a comfortable, economical stay in a foreign country.

They're willing to share their skill and time with you - it's an opportunity you won't easily find elsewhere.

Take a look at our volunteer profiles to see the range of skills at your service!

Not surprisingly, language practice is a common project, which is great if you're keen on becoming multilingual.

Learning a new language has its perks:

  • You gain a better understanding of a different culture
  • It helps you on your own travels to foreign countries. Knowing at least the basics of the local language is recommended for any traveler
  • It can be especially useful if your work involves interacting with non-native speakers
  • Do your in-laws, friends or relatives speak a different language? Being more fluent in it will no doubt allow you to understand them better (and figure out what they may be saying about you!)
  • Planning to study abroad? This is an excellent opportunity to lay the foundation for the local language and be well-poised for preparatory language classes once you start university.

Learning a language is just one of the many skills on our skill-board. Some of our volunteers are proficient in computers, and will gladly share their IT skills with you.

Having trouble managing your files and folders, working your way around Skype or troubleshooting internet problems? Learn to control your computer instead of fearing it, with some help from our volunteers.

Wins from this experience

As a host you will learn to cooperate with and take care of your volunteer(s). You’ll be able to learn new skills without the cost of paying a private tutor. Furthermore, a host will learn more about the country, background, culture and lifestyle of their travelers – it’s a great experience and exchange.

Explore the world on a small budget

Home-stays and volunteer work go hand in hand. A great way to discover a new culture is to volunteer as a tutor with a local host family.

Live as a local, not as a tourist! Bask in the affection of your host family, make new friends and maybe pick up new skill or two.

Besides the local language, you might learn how to cook a staple local dish or even network with your host's contacts - you never know when those personal connections will be of use.
