About the workproject

We need 2 volunteers

We are again now able to take a limited number of volunteers for the foreseeable future. Couples are ideal!!

We have a well- developed wildlife refuge specialising in rehabilitation and long term care of orphaned or injured wombats. The refuge is on the hill overlooking the pretty little village of Majors Creek. It has a fabulous view of the village and the national park in the distance. The climate here is quite unique.
We have a need to continue development of the holding enclosures, day to day care and maintenance, additional building and the like. We are also about to begin development of a wildlife release site on a pristine piece of wilderness not too far from here. That will consist of building a rough cabin and shed as well as the release enclosures themselves.
Some of the day to day work consists of construction, cleaning out and repair and maintenance of wombat pens, feeding and watering, collecting grass and, yes, picking up poo!
So you can see we need helpers with a range of skills but most particularly a love of animals. You will need to be able to converse well in English. You will need to feel comfortable with wombats, tractors, chainsaws, shovels, tools of all sorts and good honest labour like collecting rocks!! We will be able to arrange for you to volunteer with other species carers also. So, it is a bit of farming, a bit of gardening, tree planting, a bit of building and construction particularly enclosures, a lot of clearing up and pulling out fences etc and a lot of caring for and cuddling wombats. Being good with a camera would be a bonus as we create a wombat calendar each year and are always after good photos.

My wife Les and I are both retired educators, she a teacher and I was a regional consultant in public education. I am currently teaching 3 days a week in a Learning Support unit in a high school. We run the Majors Creek Wombat Refuge, we assist in the running of two volunteer wildlife rescue groups and are too busy to get everything done. We are expanding our refuge and are about to develop a 80 ha release site as an eco project. We are often involved in wildlife rescues of all sorts.
