We need 2 volunteers
-About Sikola Kampo-
Sikola Kampo is a non-formal school that I founded with several of my friends since 2016 ago. This school we involve children from the age of 10-12 years. Children here learn with outdoor concepts, I want children to get closer to nature and be able to think fresh.
#How do volunteers teach at Sikola Kampo?
• Volunteers will teach every afternoon from 15:00 - 17:00.
Here volunteers will teach English in a non-formal way (only basic lessons and conversations) for 2 hours and for 1 hour is a game using basic media.
• Volunteers will teach for 4 days a week, namely;
- Monday
- Tuesday
- Wednesday
- Saturday
Friday is a holiday and Sunday, we will join with children to carry out social activities, namely cleaning the beach from plastic waste while providing understanding to children about the impact of plastic waste on the sea and its ecosystem and natural environment. In this activity we will also plant mangrove seedlings in the prepared coastal area.
# Cultural exchange and learning opportunities:
Here volunteer friends will get some benefits and they can also collaborate with local communities about cultural differences. Volunteer friends will have the opportunity to learn local culture such as gardening and traditional food processing, fishing with traditional techniques, engaging in cultural events, etc.
While on Tomia Island, volunteer friends will also visit a number of cultural sites, such as old fortresses, pristine villages, learning traditional dances, and visiting the Bajo tribe (nomads fishman) with unique social concepts that reside in coastal and the sea. If volunteer friends want to learn Indonesian and local languages, we also open the class for free.
#What do you help?
The main thing in this assistance is teaching English.
At Sikola Kampo also volunteer friends can exchange experiences with us and children. Here we also develop several projects such as;
- Painting and drawing,
- Learn local dances,
- Making handicrafts from plastic waste,
- Learn music.

English, Indonesian
You can call me Al for simpler. I was in a small town, namely Usuku, Tomia Island, Wakatobi Regency, Southeast Sulawesi. Apart from being a social and environmental activist who initiated Tomia Volnteering, I also concentrate on empowering and increasing the capacity of local communities in villages to obtain decent livelihood rights through sustainable management of natural potential.
Teaching at Sikola Kampo
Sikola Kampo (Sekolah Kampong) is an alternative education activity that I formed with my friends in 2016. Sikola Kampo is free for local children and youth to become skilled and can benefit from tourism activities, and the basic things we provide are learn English. This is done because the problem faced by local communities in tourism activities is communication with foreign tourists.
Sikola Kampo is located in Kahianga Village, where this village is also one of the traditional tourist villages on Tomia Island. The distance from my house to this village only takes 20 minutes by motorbike. At Kampo Sikola we have also developed several special activities for local youth such as painting, bamboo crafts, music, food and beverage processing, and others that we can do through the potential that exists in the village. So you can also share with us about the useful experiences you had and we can develop here.
80% of the learning activities at Sikola Kampo are outdoors so that participants can appear fresh to learn. The most important thing we need at Sikola Kampo is about how local children and youth can develop in communicating using English. And to teach English what I mean here is not to be formal like in formal schools. But through basic introduction for children and practical communication or conversation for local youth.
This English teaching and learning activity is carried out on:
Monday
3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Wednesday
3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Thursday
3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Saturday
3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
How to reach Tomia Island?
If you are in Indonesia, there are two flight options for the nearest airport. First, you will take a flight to Betoambari Airport, Baubau city. After that you will go to Murhum Harbor to get the regular ferry to Tomia Island. For this ferry departure schedule every Thursday and Sunday at 10 pm. Second, you will take a flight to Matahora Airport, Wangi-Wangi Island. After that you will go to Numana Harbor to get a regular fast boat to Tomia Island. For this fast boat departure schedule every day at 2 pm. I will be at the port to pick you up when you arrive at Tomia Island.
How much spending money will I need?
It depends on how long you will be on Tomia Island. If you only do Tomia Volunteering activities, then you don’t need to pay for accommodation, meals, and other equipment facilities during the activity. Because everything is my responsibility. Maybe you will only prepare additional costs for activities outside the program such as shopping for personal needs and restaurant meals.
Do I have to bring cash or card?
Before going to Tomia Island, I advise you to exchange cash first because there is no special ATM for MasterCard and Visa on Tomia Island. I also suggest that you prepare a larger budget so that you can freely carry out activities that require spending money beyond the needs of the Tomia Volunteering program. Previous experience was that some volunteers ran out of cash while on Tomia Island because they might be too excited for adventure and shopping.
What about accommodation?
During you are on Tomia Island, you will stay at my house with a private room. A very simple house in the city center, close to shopping for basic needs, traditional restaurant, and has very friendly neighbors. In this house we will cook and eat together and you can also share your experiences with me about the cuisine from your country. I think it will be very fun because here you and I are like a family, so I hope you don’t hesitate.
Do many travel alone?
Yes of course! Most of the friends who are part of Tomia Volunteering are solo travelers. When you are on Tomia Island then you have become my responsibility. So don’t you worry.
How about Internet connection?
To access the internet at home, I still do it using a SIM card with 4G connection. Because on Tomia Island there is no WiFi network. So I suggest if you want to access the internet you should change the SIM card for a while. You can also get it at the counter on Tomia Island.
