About the workproject

We need 4 volunteers

Virtue Farm is a 33 acre property overlooking Fraser Island, and includes 27 acres of remnant forest which will never be developed. The forest is an oasis for bird life and other animals and is great for walking. We are creating a chemical free, sustainable farm using permaculture principles.
We are 10 minutes from Hervey Bay and 10 minutes from the Fraser Island Barge that leaves from River Heads. We have an existing permaculture garden and are upscaling to small farm size. Our house block is 1.5 acres and backs on to the farm land.
We are in the beginning stages of becoming a commercially viable farm, so you will be helping to establish our property.
We ask for four to five hours of work per day per person. This could include farm work, vegetable patch work, caring for the chooks, moving small saplings, rock picking, planting, mulching, weeding, harvesting, fencing, land clearing and chopping wood and general home maintenance. If you have any specific skill base or interest we are open to negotiation.
We look forward to welcoming you to Virtue Farm, so named because it is on Virtue Ave Booral, as well as the word fitting our beliefs. The word virtue can be a trait or disposition of character that leads to good behaviour. One example is that someone with virtue displays wisdom, courage, kindness, good manners, courtesy, modesty, generosity, and self-control in their life. They treat others fairly and esteem others highly and value the sanctity of life. They treat others better than they are treated. Someone who has virtue has good moral ethics.

John and I started our permaculture garden around ten years ago and are now upscaling to a small farm size. Heidi holds a full time job as a teacher so is mainly available weekends and school holidays. John works full time establishing the farm and working on our property.
We love that the kangaroos come to our yard almost daily, so we choose not to have domesticated pets.

We host for a minimum of four nights, we prefer to start with a week and then see if it is suitable for all of our needs before extending to a longer stay. We are completely dependent on rain for water, so water is a premium and scarce resource. You must be prepared to be water wise during your stay with us.
Accommodation for 4 in an independent flat downstairs with own bathroom and small kitchenette. 2 rooms with queen size beds would suit couples.
Internet access is available close to the house, but is not unlimited, reasonable speed.
We have 2 bicycles and helmets for you to explore Hervey Bay and the local beaches on days off as well as access to bush walks in our local area. We also have a ping pong table and you can swim in our damns to cool off.

We are very close to Fraser Island which we strongly recommend you visit for either day tours or over night stays - you are welcome to leave your belongings at our home where they will be safe. If you make Fraser Island bookings and intend to travel from our home, please check that you leave from the River Heads barge - we're happy to drop you off and pick you up from there. Tours also leave from Rainbow beach - but that's around a 2 hour coach ride to et there.
