Extreme weather on Mallorca

October 12, 2018

This short blog post is not about our finca and what we do, but about the extreme weather.

Since the catastrophic rainstorm of last week on Mallorca we have been overloaded with messages by email and whatsapp from friends and family who were concerned we may have been affected by the extreme weather.

Let me tell you that WE WERE NOT AFFECTED

This rainstorm was very local and started about 50 km away from Selva in the mountains surrounding Sant Llorenc. In Selva it had been raining with thunder the whole late afternoon and night, but not very severe like we have had many times.
How could it happen ?The steep mountains surrounding the affected area acted as a ramp: the humid air climbed up and fed the storm that had formed on the summit. And the ravine that crosses through Sant Llorenc attracted most of the rain, channeling it along it's bed.

Just outside Sant Llorenc, the water is channeled by a concrete construction, which is not really slowing down the current. So the water picked up speed on it's way down to Sant Llorenc, carrying with it large amounts of mud and tree trunks. Many cars were also dragged with it in the stream. In Sant Llorenc the water in the houses reached to about 2.5 meter in the houses.

Have a nice weekend and till next time.
