Would you like to learn (hands-on) the BASICS AND THE SUBTLETIES of all aspects of healthy Organic Food Production - from groundbreaking through harvesting to winter care of the soil? What makes "organic" special - or better said, what makes it the CORRECT way to raise nutritious food, care for the soil, and preserve heritage varieties of the plants we eat? Would YOU like to learn how to raise HEALTHIER, MORE EARTH FRIENDLY FOODSTUFFS even a little bit on your city balcony?
Come spend a week or more in some of the most beautiful orchards and growing land surrounded by lush green forested foothills of the Serra da Estrela mountains in Central Portugal.
Nestled deep in a serene, private setting, Here and Now is an ecological free learning center dedicated to organic growing, permaculture, agroecology and food forestry. Our wonderful facility is a centuries-old Portuguese estate ruin that was fully restored in 2015 completely with natural, ecological building standards.
Rob Drexel (aka Moksha) directs the project together with his partner Nikola. Whenever you choose to visit, Moksha will integrate you into his daily routine caring for and creating new gardens with his young work team (WWOOF-type volunteers), passing on his decades-earned knowledge of small-scale organic growing, soil care and creative plant and field management.
You can expect to get a flood of information about every step of each of the processes - from breaking ground and soil prep, to composting, to seeding to plant management and companion growing. All the knowledge is "scaleable" as you can grow organically on an apartment balcony or a 5-hectare field.
We will also be creating a "food forest" amongst the 60 or so beautiful cherry and olive trees in our orchard (google food forest to see what that is!)
The region here offers just beautiful scenery and hiking through thick pine forests. There are fluvial beaches ad a quaint Portuguese town near by.
A NOTE ON ACCOMMODATIONS! THE CHAPEL IN THE PICTURE IS BEING FITTED FOR AS A COMFORTABLE DORM ROOM FOR SLEEPING ONLY .... and you can sleep late on Sunday - no Sunday services... ***ALSO - IF YOU PLAN TO FLY, THE AIRPORT LISTED HERE IN NOT THE CORRECT AIRPORT (CAN'T BE CHANGED ON THE LISTING...) Moksha Drexel has been an independent entrepreneur all his adult life, giving himself more and more over the last 2 decades to first hobby, then commercial small-scale organic growing and food production. His knowledge is both from study but more importantly from hand-on, down-and-dirty (literally) creation of organic gardens, greenhouses and every aspect of the healthy, strictly NO chemical raising of a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and the accompanying care of the natural environment. He loves to talk, discuss, research and explore all kinds of ways of integrating food production with the natural processes and cycles of life.
Open year-round, contact us for availability
The main facility, living room, kitchen and 2 baths available to guests are newly renovated, fully modern facilities. During spring and early summer 2018, sleeping is in a restored Chapel attached to the main building - a chapel that has stood for centuries. The room accommodates 4 semi-private sleeping areas where, until probably April-May when there will also be comfortable camping in tents provided - guests choice!
We prepare a mid day meal 5 days a week (our "work" days) - a delicious and varied vegetarian lunch. Foodstuffs are provided for participants to prepare their own breakfasts and dinners as they wish. Prior to your visit, we will request you tell us what basic kinds of materials you like - for example, you like granola, or yogurt to be available, etc. We are not a vegetarian community so animal products and meat will sometimes be prepared in the kitchen.
