About the workproject

We need 2 volunteers

We live and work on a coastal, family run 50 acre orchard called Pouwhenua Orchards. We grow, harvest & pack feijoas and avocados for local, national and international markets & are seeking people to assist us with the avocado season which runs from start of September through to December. We are also seeking help with the 2018 feijoa harvesting season which lasts from 1 April until the end of May (approximately). Once feijoa harvesting is finished we then have 4-6 weeks of pruning ending around mid July. We are interested in other cultures and keen to sample other ethnic cooking and would invite those who stay with us to share occasional cooking duties and assist in gardening as we grow our own veges & to help with lawns (if needed). We invite you to stay a short while & if the work suits you & you find it enjoyable, then maybe stay a little longer, If you prefer to work longer hours & maybe save for further travel, then we are also open to negotiation as long as you have a work visa. So, Naumai, haeremai (welcome).

We are the parents of two grown sons who live & work overseas & are also the proud grandparents of two young grandchildren who live in Australia. Family & fostering friendships (new & old) is important to us. Shane is a full time orchardist & when time allows enjoys kayak fishing & the outdoors. Faithe is a retired teacher with involvement in a variety of community volunteer groups including involvement in foreign exchange programmes. She also enjoys reading esoteric & metaphysical books, researching family genealogy worldwide, music & overseas travel exploring other cultures. Both affiliate to the indigenous people of New Zealand (Maori people) as well as acknowledge their Irish & Scottish heritages.

Tasty Feijoas

May 17, 2018

Yum! The feijoa season is nearly over and I’ve had time to bottle the last of the season’s fruit and to make chutney - nice on meat sandwiches! Soon we will start pruning and keen to share the workload with a couple extra hands. Would love to have you on board :).
